About PlainTransplant

Our Mission

We believe patients and families facing organ transplant decisions deserve free, transparent access to the same program performance data that clinicians and researchers use. The SRTR publishes this data publicly, but navigating dense Excel files and statistical reports is impractical for most patients, especially during one of the most stressful periods of their lives.

PlainTransplant makes this data accessible. We present SRTR program-specific reports in a searchable, organized format, survival rates, waitlist statistics, and transplant volumes for 237 transplant centers across 7 organ types. No accounts, no paywalls, no sponsored results. Our goal is to help patients ask better questions of their transplant teams, not to replace medical advice.

PlainTransplant makes U.S. organ transplant program data accessible to patients, families, researchers, and healthcare professionals. We publish data for 237 transplant centers across 7 organ types, kidney, liver, heart, lung, kidney-pancreas, pancreas, and intestine, with survival rates, waitlist counts, and transplant volumes.

About the Data

All data comes directly from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), a contractor operated by the Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation (MMRF) under contract with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

SRTR publishes Program-Specific Reports (PSRs) semi-annually, covering:

• Waitlist data (Table B1): New listings and active waiting patients per program per organ
• Graft survival rates (Tables C5–C12): 1-year and 3-year graft survival rates, compared to national expected rates
• Transplant volumes (Tables B8–B9): Total transplants performed per program
• National benchmarks: Expected survival rates for risk-adjusted comparison

Our database was built from SRTR's November 2025 semi-annual release (CSRS 2511). It covers 237 active transplant programs, 7 organ types, and includes state-level and national aggregate statistics.

How We Present Rankings

Rankings on PlainTransplant are based on 1-year graft survival rate as reported by SRTR. Rankings use sequential numbering (no ties) with alphabetical tiebreaking.

Important: Survival rates alone do not determine the "best" transplant center. Centers that accept higher-risk patients or perform more complex cases may have lower reported rates than their actual quality warrants. SRTR risk-adjusts rates to account for patient characteristics, but statistical variation still exists, especially at lower-volume programs. We explicitly avoid the word "best" in our data presentation and include contextual caveats throughout the site.

What This Data Can and Cannot Tell You

It can tell you:

• Historical survival outcomes for specific organ programs
• How a center's reported rates compare to national averages
• Current waitlist size and transplant volume at a center
• Which centers perform which organ types

It cannot tell you:

• Your individual likelihood of transplant success
• Current wait times for your blood type and medical urgency
• Which center is right for your specific medical situation
• Real-time center capacity or acceptance policies

Methodology

We download SRTR PSR Excel files directly from srtr.org. We parse the structured XLS data, normalize center names and codes, compute state aggregates, and store the results in a read-only dataset. No data is modified, interpolated, or fabricated. Where SRTR reports data as suppressed or unavailable, we display "N/A".

Update Schedule

SRTR releases updated PSR data approximately every 6 months (May and November). We update our database when new data is published. Current data: SRTR CSRS November 2025.

PlainTransplant is not affiliated with SRTR, OPTN, UNOS, HRSA, or any government agency. We are an independent data portal providing public information in a more accessible format. For authoritative transplant program information, visit srtr.org or optn.transplant.hrsa.gov.

How We Process the Data

We download SRTR Program-Specific Report (PSR) Excel files directly from srtr.org and parse the structured data. Center names and OPTN codes are normalized, state-level aggregates are computed, and the results are written to a read-only database. No survival rates, waitlist counts, or transplant volumes are modified, interpolated, or fabricated.

Where SRTR suppresses data due to small cohort sizes, we display it as unavailable rather than estimating a value. Survival rates represent statistical outcomes from historical patient cohorts and should not be interpreted as predictions of individual outcomes.

Editorial Independence

Content on PlainTransplant is compiled by our editorial team. Raw data from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), OPTN/UNOS, and HRSA is transformed into readable center and organ profiles by our continuous editorial pipeline, validated against the source before publication. The PlainTransplant editorial team is responsible for editorial standards, methodology, and corrections.

We do not accept payment, sponsorship, or promoted placement from hospitals, transplant programs, device manufacturers, pharmaceutical firms, or any covered entity. Our only revenue source is contextual display advertising served by Google AdSense, advertisers do not influence which centers we cover or how we present survival, volume, and waitlist data, and they do not receive preferential placement or ranking.
